To protect Japanese network infrastructures against cyberattacks, the Network Security Research Institute is seeking to establish a global center of excellence in network security research and development, based on a sophisticated combination of theory and practice, taking full advantage of the NICT stance of neutrality.

The Network Security Research Institute
- Systematically and strategically pursues effective research and development as a national research institution to protect Japanese network infrastructures against increasingly sophisticated and diverse cyber attacks.
- Pursues theoretical and practical research focusing on network security.
- Pursues practical research, using a large-scale network monitoring environment based on the NICT stance of neutrality.
- Expands security ranging from the perspective of points (individual site security) to security for an area (the entire network).
- Systematically applies research outcomes and contributes to society for all parties in the industrial, academic, private, and government sectors by encouraging data use, providing analytical information, promoting technology transfers, and supporting security evaluations.

Specifically, we concentrate on three major research and development topics: cyber-security technology, which establishes a technical basis for leading-edge cyber attack monitoring, tracking, analysis, response, and prevention to help solve social problems; security architecture technology, which provides secure networks by establishing techniques for optimized configuration, design, and evaluation of secure networks, including mobile, cloud, and new-generation NW; and security fundamentals technology, which establishes practical next-generation cryptographic technologies ranging from modern cryptography to quantum security. We continue to pursue the world-leading research and development demanded by society by combining and integrating these three core research areas to provide a safe, secure ICT environment for all people.

Organization

The Planning Office supports the research activities in the Network Security Research Institute.

The Cybersecurity Laboratory conducts highly practical and macroscopic security research to promptly grasp, closely analyze, and provide effective countermeasures against evolving cyber attacks.

The Security Architecture Laboratory pursues research on architectures that allow use of optimized information security at anytime, for any period, transparently, for the widest range of users possible, over complex information networks that combine diverse technologies.

The Security Fundamentals Laboratory evaluates the security of currently used cryptographic technologies and also pursues research and development in the area of security fundamentals. We take a diverse approach to respond to various security requirements. In addition to research on modern cryptography, we seek to develop new security technologies, including those that apply quantum ICT and post-quantum cryptography.
